Shark attack victim, Marcia Hathaway, 1963

On the Australia Day long weekend of 1963, Marcia Hathway and her fiancé, Frederick Knight, were wading in the waters of Sugarloaf Bay in Sydney’s Middle Harbour. There had been 66 shark sightings off Sydney the day before, and local newspapers had warned the public of the dangers of swimming.

Five minutes after entering the water, Hathaway, a 32-year-old actress, was attacked by a shark that almost tore off her right leg. Knight frantically fought off the animal with his hands and feet and dragged his fiancé to shore.

An ambulance arrived soon after but struggled to make its way back up the steep track from the bay. Bystanders tried desperately to push the vehicle back up the hill but another ambulance had to be called. Ms Hathaway died soon after arriving at hospital.

In the days after the attack, the press reported on many attempts by fishermen to catch the shark and make Sydney’s beaches safe. Several large sharks were caught, including one that was dissected in the main street of Ermington, an inner western suburb on Sydney’s Parramatta River. However, none were proven conclusively to be the killer shark.
